How to Search the Scientific Literature

The internet has made it possible to search the published scientific literature at the touch of a finger. The following are suggestions for reliable pathways.

Medline

MedlinePlus will direct you to information to help answer health questions. MedlinePlus brings together authoritative information from U.S. National Library of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and other government agencies and health-related organizations. Pre-formulated MEDLINE searches are included in MedlinePlus and give easy access to medical journal articles. MedlinePlus also has extensive information about drugs, an illustrated medical encyclopedia, interactive patient tutorials, and the latest health news.

PubMed

PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine that includes over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources.

To search the scientific literature on ANY topic, simply follow the instructions. If you are feeling adventurous, simply type your key words in the box at the top of the page. For example, if you want to read scientific articles about coenzyme Q10 and aging — type in coenzyme Q10 and aging, and press go. Over 80 articles will appear.
